30 Days Before Gears of War: Judgment

When the original Gears of War emerged into the shooter world in 2006, it did great things for the Xbox platform. It looked incredible, played well, and gave gamers an entire planet to fight for. To this day the series remains a critical part of the Xbox lineup, and one more addition to that lineup is coming next month.

Gears of War: Judgment -- a prequel from the same folks that created the outrageous Bulletstorm -- is almost upon us. If you haven't followed Judgment these past few months, here's the quick and easy catch-up -- complete with brand new video, screenshots, and just a pinch of sass.

The Basics

Gears of War: Judgment brings us back in time to the early days following Emergence Day. Before Marcus went to prison, before Dom yelled "MARIAAAAAAA," Damon Baird and Augustus Cole teamed up with two other folks to take down the Locust -- Sofia Hendrick, an upcoming Onyx Guard, and Garron Paduk, a refugee from the other side of the Pendulum Wars.

Kilo Squad, as they're called, is on trial for disobeying orders and putting the remaining survivors of the planet Sera at risk. Judgment runs through Kilo's recollection of the events leading up to their capture.

Who's It For

Judgment is for both hardcore shooter players and Gears nerds. The story puts the series' secondary characters in leading roles, showing a different side of a history we thought we knew. At the same time, it's the most intense and difficult Gears of War game yet -- developer People Can Fly will test your long-developed skills by shaking up the formula.

A new spawning system keeps enemy encounters unpredictable, and optional variables that restrict weapon types, visibility, and more should keep the most talented of veterans on their toes. Multiplayer continues its trend of evolving the Locust vs. COG setup as well: OverRun is an objective-based attack/defend mode that Horde and Beast fans are going to fall in love with.

How It Looks

Predictably, Judgment looks like a Gears of War game. But in terms of color, contrast, and composition, the level of vibrant detail goes beyond Gears of War 3's artistic direction.
