Last week, Microsoft announced sales of over 60 million Windows 8 licenses since launch. While the figure seemed reassuring for adoption of the new OS, one web analysis firm is showing low numbers for overall Windows 8 desktop usage. As noted by SlashGear, analytics portal NetMarketShare has Windows 8 only accounting for 2.26-percent of the OS market as of January.
After three months since launch, less than 3-percent of desktop web usage seems incredibly low. Granted, these statistics are based on web analytics, not clear and provable sales figures. But the bigger question is whether or not this perceived slow adoption of Windows 8 will suddenly turn around. Starting today, the price of upgrading to Windows 8 has skyrocketed to $120; the same upgrade was $40 through yesterday.
According to SlashGear, Mac OS X Mountain Lion accounted for 2.44-percent of OS market share during the same period; a little better than Windows 8. But Apple's latest OS update, 10.8 Mountain Lion, accounts for almost 40-percent of Mac OS X usage.
Comparatively, Windows 7 still makes up 44.48-percent of overall OS market share, while Windows XP still accounts for 39.51-percent.
