Abrams Talks Klingons, Carol Marcus

J.J. Abrams may have Star Wars: Episode VII in the pipeline, but let's not forget that he's still also at the helm of the Star Trek franchise. The long-awaited sequel Star Trek Into Darkness hits in May, which means more and more details about the top-secret storyline will begin to be revealed in the coming months.

In a new interview with MTV, Abrams addresses two new additions to the rebooted series: the nasty Klingons and the lovely Doctor Carol Marcus. Regarding the former, he confirms that the ridge-headed aliens will in fact be bad guys in the new film: "Their role in this is definitely that of adversary," says Abrams, "and you'll see how they play out."

As far as Carol Marcus goes, the character who will be played by Alice Eve is traditionally thought of as a love interest for Captain Kirk. But Abrams says the film won't necessarily focus on that aspect of their relationship.

"[He] meets her fairly early on and again she plays a science officer, someone who is part of the adventure," says the director. "It's very much an action-adventure movie and once that gets going it's a very difficult thing to park the story. So it's very difficult to do a romantic interlude. Her role is important -- she wouldn't be in the movie otherwise."

But has she started working on the Genesis program yet?
