Sony Remembers the PSP Era (and Vita, Too)

In anticipation of the probable reveal of PlayStation 4 on Wednesday in New York City, Sony has been releasing short documentary-like videos about each PlayStation device. On Friday, we took a look at the original PlayStation. On Saturday, Sony celebrated the PlayStation 2. And then on Sunday, a video was released for PlayStation 3.

Today, we have a new video. This one focuses on PlayStation Portable (PSP) and PlayStation Vita. You can see the video below.

The PlayStation Portable’s incredible success has often been understated and overshadowed due to a simple fact: it was competing with the Nintendo DS, an extraordinarily successful handheld that’s sold over 150 million units. But PSP’s no slouch, with over 71 million units sold (about the same number of PS3s in the wild right now).

The Vita, on the other hand, has had marked troubles at retail since it came out in Japan in late 2011. The promising and powerful handheld has struggled; perhaps four million or so have been sold, though Sony hasn’t released any official numbers as of late.

For the original three videos celebrating PSone, PS2 and PS3, simply scroll down. And be sure to join us for our PlayStation 4 live stream here on IGN this Wednesday.
