Sony Quiet on PlayStation Vita Price Cut in the West

Late last night, we brought you some good news out of Japan: PlayStation Vita would be getting a price cut. It will now cost just under ¥20,000 in Japan (regardless of if you’re buying the3G or Wi-Fi model), but the announcement was made only for Sony’s home country.

We reached out to Sony for comment and clarification, specifically on if the handheld would receive a similar (if not identical) price drop in North America, Europe and elsewhere. Sony was succinct and to the point in its response: “We have nothing to announce at this point in time.”

Now, the expected reveal of PlayStation 4 is in New York City in just a couple of days, and it’s reasonable to assume that the western Vita price cut will be announced there. If it is, a ¥20,000 price tag in Japan equates to $215 in the United States, £140 in England and €160 in the rest of Europe. Japan typically pays a bit more for hardware than we do here in the US, for instance, suggesting that Vita’s new price could very well be $199.

For the time being, this is all speculation, but it’s interesting that Sony clarified that there’s nothing to announce at this point in time. While PS4 will likely steal the show on Wednesday, a Vita price cut could be the next biggest story and could very well help revitalize the struggling handheld in western markets.
